• Meghalaya’s North Tura Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Thomas A Sangma was elected the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on 10 March 2023.
• Sangma, who is from the National People’s Party (NPP), was elected unanimously as no other candidate had filed the nomination for the Speaker’s post.
• He replaced Metbah Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

• Conrad Sangma took oath as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya for the second consecutive term.

• Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers of Meghalaya, in Shillong.

• The country’s first Electric Pilgrimage Corridor is being built in the Uttarakhand’s Chardham Yatra route, about 900 km long.
• Charging points are being made every 30 km for private electric vehicles (EV).
• Charging point facility will also be available in all the guest houses of the state. 
• E-vehicles are being encouraged because they will reduce the harm to the environment.

• India reported its first two deaths due to the Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus, one each from Karnataka and Haryana on 10 March 2023.
• Ninety cases of H3N2 have been reported over the last three months in India.
• In Karnataka, 82-year-old Hire Gowda died due to the H3N2 virus.
• The infection is contracting children more than adults and children below 15 are more prone to the viral infection.

• Renowned Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) appointed Rohit Jawa as its new Managing Director and CEO of the company on 10 March 2023.
• He will replace present managing director & CEO Sanjiv Mehta who is set to retire on 30 Mar 2023.
• He will also take over as the president of Unilever South Asia from the present Chief of Transformation based in London.
• Jawa will join HUL board as a whole-time director from April 1, 2023. 
• Hindustan Unilever Led (HUL) is India’s largest Fast-Moving Consumer Goods company.

• India has been referred to as Australia’s “top-tier security partner” by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia.
• He said this after boarding INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, in Mumbai on 9 March 2023.
• His visit to INS Vikrant marks the celebration of 75 years of friendship between India and Australia.
• Australia will host Exercise Malabar for the first time and India will, also the first time, participate in Australia’s Talisman Sabre exercise.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Albanese watched the first day of the final test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in the Narendra Modi stadium.

• Shaun Marsh on 10 March 2023, announced his retirement from first-class cricket.
• Marsh made his first-class debut for Western Australia in 2001 when he was 17 years old.
• He also holds the record for most runs for Western Australia in all formats: 12,811 runs in 236 matches.
• He played all three formats of cricket for Australia and scored more than 12,000 runs, including 32 centuries.

• Iran and Saudi Arabia on 10 March 2023, agreed to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies in each other’s countries.
• It was announced after China-led negotiations were held in Beijing in March 2023.
• They also agreed that the foreign ministers of both countries would meet to implement this and improve bilateral relations and that previous cooperation accords.
• Both Saudi Arabia and Iran extended their appreciation and thanks to Iraq and Oman for hosting multiple rounds of dialogue between 2021 and 2022.

• The Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by CM Yogi Adityanath, on 10 March 2023, approved the New Sports Policy 2023.
• As part of the new sports policy, special focus is to be laid on a range of aspects from a player’s physical fitness to training.
• Along with this, various provisions have been made to support the development of new institutions while connecting schools, and colleges with sports.
• In the new sports policy 2023, there is a provision to establish a state sports authority on the lines of the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
• Additionally, the state will put in place a State Sports Development Fund.
• Through this fund, weak players, associations, or academies will receive assistance.

• He unveiled multiple development works worth Rs154 crore of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority.
• Among these, the biggest work is the inauguration of a new over-bridge at Sanathal Junction on Sardar Patel Ring Road at a cost of Rs100 crore project.
• Smart schools have been inaugurated in Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Shela, Thaltej and Sarkhej under the municipal project
• The other development works include:
  • Senior Citizen Park at Chandkheda and Nawadaj at a cost of Rs. 62 lakh
  • Pedestrian subway near Ahmedabad-Viramgam broad gauge line at a cost of Rs. 4.39 crore
  • 5 Anganwadis at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh.
